5 Simple Steps to Making Each Day Count
Just the other day, I had a to do list as long as my arm and at the end of the day I had not ticked one single thing off. Was it frustrating? Of course it was, and yet at the end of the day, I realised that although I had not accomplished anything I’d set out to, I had learned and grown in my experience and in my learning.
That day taught me that you can have a great day every day regardless and these are the lessons I learnt.
1. Wake up Happy
When you awake every morning, do you start your day with a smile to yourself and think of all the possibilities this day will hold, or do you roll over and groan at the thought of yet another day?
Our mindset at the starting point of each day is an imperative part that inherently determines how the rest of the day might go. Waking up happy sets the tone, for your mood and the interactions with the people that you will meet throughout the day.
It often helps to…
2. Start each day with a positive message
From the moment we wake up in the morning to the time we retire to bed, our whole day is defined by the messages we feed ourselves.
If we are adamant that the day will be ruined, because of the weather, the rain, the traffic, the kids not listening then without a doubt, it will be exactly that. And this subsequently has the knock on effect of playing out the day exactly as we view it.
On the flip side, if we start the day with a positive self-message that ‘This day will be an amazing day, whatever happens’, that message too will be the over-riding.
Given that you have all the power to choose how your day unfolds, wouldn’t it make sense to choose to a good day?
3. Do the best you can and accept what comes your way
No matter how much we plan, or however good and strong our intentions may be, there will always be days when things do not quite go as we imagined.
If that (or shit) happens, as it sometimes will, the best thing to do is to simply, do the best you can under the circumstances and then let go, sit back and enjoy the journey wherever it may take you.
This will undoubtedly take some practise, but over time, it does become easier.

4. Find the joy, share the joy
Each day is filled with countless little moments in which we can make a difference in our own lives and in the lives of the people around us, whether it is admiring the vast openness of the beautiful sky, a heartfelt compliment to a friend or simply a smile to a stranger.
Finding time to look for the little joys in life make each day a little sweeter.
And if you happen to feel stuck in a situation you do not like or have little control over, it becomes even more important to look for and value the positives in each day.
5. End each day with thanks
If we consider that each day is a gift of 24 hours in which we choose how we spend the time, we realise that there is always much to be thankful for, regardless of the circumstances.
Whatever happens in the intervening 24 hours of each day, you will have lived and learnt and grown. Some days may be more lessons and some days may be more joy, either way there will always be something for which to be thankful.
And if you end each day with a grateful heart, you would have made the very best of what each day has had to offer you.

Hi Li-ling – great tips here for making the most each day. Those few minutes and hours in the morning can determine the condition for the day so better to make it more positive and happy.
I actually do my gratefulness practice in the morning to inspire more thanks and positivity first thing in the morning. I’ve also slowed down my life and job so I can enjoy all these simple things in life. If we start living life more consciously in the ways you’ve described, we can have a great day every day.

Vishnu, what a great way to start each day. Counting your blessings. I can definitely understand about slowing down life and taking time to savour each moment. I know you’ve made really great changes in your life and it’s must have taken a huge amount of courage – well done you!
