Speak Gently With Yourself
The world we live in today is one in which we are constantly bombarded by messages of short-comings and lack.
The advertisement on the TV implies that you’ll be happier once you’ve switched over to a particular brand of dish washing liquid, or the smiling photos of children by the beach that entice you to believe that you’ll be happy when you get there. Or that car they advertise as THE ONLY ONE for you.
And if this wasn’t bad enough, what about all those messages we keep sending ourselves, “We need a bigger house like the Smiths.” or “I don’t make as much money as Anna, even though I’m more qualified.”
Or all the “if only’s” we find tell ourselves, “If only I went to University”, “If only I made more money” “If only my spouse would listen” “If only my children were better behaved”
The truth is Being YOU is good enough.
Stop listening, more importantly, stop believing the messages that tell you about all the things you lack.
Look around you and you will realise, life is actually pretty good. Sure you may not have the mansion you dream about, but that roof over your head, is your sanctuary, your place to be who you are, your home.
Whether you take the bus or drive a beat-up ‘ole banger (or may be not) ask yourself does it really matter? Physical things only go so far to making our lives easier.
And when that little voice in your head that tells you all about the “should have’s”, “could have’s”, “if only’s”…
Take a deep breath and repeat after me
I am who I am and I am doing best that I can.
Now say it again.
I am who I am and I am doing best that I can.
Smile (your widest, cheesiest smile) and say it one final time.
I am who I am and I am doing best that I can.
Now, every time that little voice pops up and tells you about your lack, look around you at all the things surrounding that are good and wonderful, think about all the effort you’re putting in to live life the best way you know how and remind yourself…
I am who I am and I am doing best that I can.
Remember, Happiness is a state of mind, not a product purchased of the supermarket shelf.
Trust that YOU are good enough, just the way you are, I DO.
